Buying From The Rare Crafter
Is it a good idea to buy rare materials from the rare crafter? My friends have been saying to just try to farm them, but I don't know where I can get Diamonds or Rubies and stuff.
I might buy Spiritwood Planks, too, but maybe I can make them out of Glittering Dust and Wood? Would this be cheaper? |

You can buy rare materials from other players for much less than the Material Traders. Player prices fall between the Traders "Sell" price and their "buy" price.
And there are lots of rare materials that can be gotten very cheaply by doing business with Artisans. Here's a link to all they have to offer and what they require: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Artisan |

Yeah I was planning on getting my spiritwood planks from the artisans. But where can I find Diamond and Ruby sellers? I tried checking the selling forum....

Some rare materials can't be crafted. Such as the gemstones, ecto, shards etc.
Others can be and if you already have the base materials (like wood and dust) then the cheapest way will be to craft some. The problem with gemstones is they can't really be farmed. They are a very rare drop from foes. One other way is to get things like Jewled Daggers and Ruby Hammers from Vabbi area in NF and apply the 'Measure to Measure' inscription then salvage to materials for the chance to get a gem. You can look on the wiki page to see the sources for items: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Sapphire |

As bsoltan said gems are the most annoying rare mat to get.
Another way to get them is to bring Ligth of Deldrimor when doing dungeons(sc's are fine too)...there's a small chance to get a ruby/shappire from hidden chests, and diamond/onyx from dungeons end chests. |

I know Diamonds are so rare, that's why I kind of want to buy them from the rare crafter. The only quest that gives one out is Attack on Jalis's Camp and that's only for one diamond. I also can't find any sellers in any of the main trading cities. :[

you can also get some of the gems (diamonds, rubies and sapphires) from trade contracts in nightfall at the kodash bazaar --there's a bunch of quests that give out the contracts and 7 contracts gets you a gem from the trader there.

Diamonds aren't as rare as Sapphire and Ruby as they drop quite often from the end chest of dungeons. They have gone up in price now due to their requirement in Destroyer Weapons for the HoM but before the HoM Update they were down to about 100g each.
Due to the price they fetch at the trader now most people may sell them to the trader or use them to craft weapons themselves or hold on to them incase there is another bump in price. Ectos are found in UW and Shards in FoW so these are regular farming areas for those items. As I said, put the material in to the wiki search and it will give you a list of likely places you'll be able to find them. I would only buy from the trader if I was in a real hurry for something. You can often find individuals selling one or two gems in Kamadan. |

You'd be better off farming ecto, feathers, consets or stuff for Nicholas and use that money to buy the gems.

As a side note, I'm amazed that GW can keep track of all these gems and other materials. How is it done? How much of the material tracking is done on our PCs, and how much on the servers?

Yes. Buy them from whoever you like. It will cost you more "gold" to buy some things from the crafter, but it's only play-money - it really doesn't matter if or how you spend it. For most materials, the difference in cost between buying them from others or from artisans, or the crafter, is not worth worrying about. About the only exception is expensive stuff like Ectos.
You can earn more gold spending your time playing, than you can save by running around trying to buy stuff cheap. |

If I need a large quantity of Rare Materials and I can't find another player selling them, then I just buy from the Rare Materials Trader NPC and go about my business as usual.

If you haven't done them yet, I'd strongly advise opening the Nightfall Treasures. One character of mine got 2 rubies and a sapphire from 4 chests last week. Another character got another ruby yesterday. Luck dependent, but opening them doesn't cost anything other than a little time.

what I usually do is compare the cost of the rare material to what it would cost to craft (if you CAN craft it)..then I check to see if I have the mats for the crafting....do some math and make my decision...some times I have plenty of the mats other times I have the plat. Just depends. (some are much cheaper to make than buy while others are cheaper to buy than make ALL THE TIME)....

Not true. Have surplus even after buying max and 70k armors for all my 12 characters. Doesn't mean that you buy your stuffs that you arent saving. When you savage, you are losing money that you could have earned if you sold the items. In the end, It is still about the same.
